A little bit of culture

Yesterday was a bit of a crazy day, the first day of Songkran, or to those of you not familiar with Thai, it was the first day of the Thai new year celebrations. Which basically means there are massive water fights in the streets. Everyone was armed with pump-action water pistols or any kind of water-holding container to drench everyone in sight. I managed to escape a complete soaking but I did get squirted with watered down talcum powder. I smelt rather fragrant until I had a shower round the pool!

It's not a bad way to celebrate at the hottest time of the year though. What else have I picked up since I've been here that I can educate you with? Apparently Koh Tao has a really bad rubbish problem and it's all building up in the middle of the island. The locals don't know what to do about it so who knows when that's going to spill into a major problem?!

Perhaps not the kind of history you were looking for... Bangkok has the longest name for a city in the Guinness Book of Records (it's full Thai name that is). I shan't type it all out here as I can't remember it off by heart - I read it in my first book of my travels, Bangkok Days. Take note, McManus, that means task one of mission one is completed. I've read a book based on Thailand while in the country. I now have many more to read as I cross borders and enter new worlds.

Leaving the island tomorrow so have been traipsing round all the internet cafes trying to find a printer to print my ferry ticket. Eureka at last with where I type from now.

Off to get some food and maybe treat myself to a glass of wine. Laters...
